Tactile Graphics |
Tactile graphics are illustrations, diagrams and charts with raised lines for Braille readers. Computer-drawn tactile graphics are ideal for frequently updated textbooks, tests, corporate material or maps. |
 |
We are an industry leader in developing accessible tactiles, with emphasis on proper line width, spacing and use of textures for different elements.
Our tactile graphics specialists use the latest illustration software to produce tactiles for any use.
Here are their advantages:
Electronic master drawings can be reused, edited and updated as needed. Commercial or clip art can be used to start, saving time compared to creating each custom drawing from scratch.
Electronic masters are adjusted for each different embossing mode. Lines and patterns are altered for greatest readability. |
| THE PROCESS |
The tactile illustration embossing process we use depends on the number of copies ordered: |
Less than 25 copies:
Master illustrations are created with a computer drawing program and output one of two ways:
Swell paper - The image is copied onto a special heat-sensitive paper called either swell paper or microcapsule paper. That sheet is then exposed to heat, which creates a raised-line image of a black outline.
Tiger Embosser - The image is sent directly to a braille-paper embosser that simulates line drawings with a series of microdots.
25 or more copies:
Film Negative - A film negative is made from the computer-drawn master illustration. The film image is chemically etched onto a specially coated "nylo" press plate. Embossed paper copies are then run on one of two Heidelberg sheet-fed presses. Press products are usually folded and saddle-stitched, with a cover or cover page.
Thermoform - We can also duplicate your braille paper masters and hand-drawn collage graphics using traditional thermoform machines. |
THE COST |
Each job is unique, so tactile graphics are priced on a per-project basis. Your estimate will include collating and shipping costs. |
