We can take any existing Braille or tactile illustration file (ours or yours) and emboss multiple Braille copies. We can also emboss braille or raised-line drawings directly onto pre-printed documents such as business cards or
announcements. As with all materials in special media for the blind, there are no copyright restrictions on Braille.
Our production staff are cross-trained on all our equipment. They also maintain equipment weekly, quality-check materials at various production stages and assemble and ship orders. Our production efforts are supplemented by an average of 6,000 volunteer hours annually.
WHAT WE CAN EMBOSS:
We can Braille in any quantity from one business card to thousands of copies of a book or magazine.
Source files we can emboss include:
Any existing Braille file created in:
Duxbury, EditPC, Braille 2000, Megadots, Perky Duck, Word |
Any existing tactile graphic file created in:
Word, Illustrator, Corel Draw or Freehand |
| Titles posted by Braille Institute on the American Printing House Louis database or repository |
| Bookshare files |
If your printed document is to be Brailled, we recommend you consult with us prior to printing to assure we can accommodate your copy. Braille cannot be "resized" to fit a document the way text can be printed in various sizes.
The braille embossing process used depends on the number of copies ordered:
| Less than 250 copies |
| These small orders are output a page at a time on our computer-driven production embossers. Braille volumes are comb-bound with a cardboard or clear plastic cover. |
| More than 250 copies |
| For high-speed production we have two Heidelberg rotary sheet-fed presses. Press sheets are run in book format, then folded and saddle-stitched, with a cover or cover page. |
Output for all embossed products is interpointed (embossed on both sides) in contracted Braille. As a rule, one page of 8.5x11" double-spaced standard print equals three 11 x 11.5" pages of contracted Braille. We can accommodate some custom-size braille pages, including 8.5 x 11". Ideally, business cards are brailled before the press sheet is cut, but can be embossed individually.
COST FACTORS:
Embossing services are priced on a per-page basis. Collation, binding and shipping costs vary per job. All materials are shipped Free Matter for the Blind unless otherwise specified.
